The Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Programme was a Scholarship funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and Rolls-Royce for 12 participants in the field of science and innovation - with links to public policy - in India. The unique programme aimed specifically at mid-career Indian professionals with exceptionally high potential working in the fields of science, innovation, business and related public administration, in the following disciplines: business, research, technology, manufacturing, and public administration. It provided funding for three months’ study on a tailor-made course in the UK and provided an invaluable opportunity for participants to establish their own networks of contacts in the UK who would be of direct value to their work and career development in India.

Programme content

The programme provided opportunities for personal and professional development by including a mixture of academic sessions, visits, group and individual projects, tutorials/ mentoring sessions, debates, guided/focused study visits and seminars and projects of professional relevance, and social and cultural activities (with an emphasis on visual and spoken communication). There was significant contact with UK specialists and opportunities for participants to develop their own connections and interests. Participants: developed an understanding of the UK science base and a range of innovation management processes explored the interactions between research, innovation and policy researched and presented a business plan based on their own interests and experience visited a wide range of UK institutions, research institutes, businesses and social entrepreneurship organisations took part in a varied cultural programme, and explore potential insights from the arts to the working environment
There were four main strands: Science, Innovation, Leadership & Management and Politics/Policy. The programme included visits and interactions with high profile companies and scientists and bridged pure research and business/scientific entrepreneurship, practical processes of innovation, commercialisation of research and technology transfer.

Throughout the programme, participants received personal and professional development coaching from trained mentors of the Saïd Business School. These mentors helped guide individuals and groups through the content of the programme, and also worked to ensure that each person got the most from his or her experience.  As part of the programme, each participant also researched, developed and presented a business plan.

I am delighted that Oxford University hosts the Chevening Rolls-Royce Science and Innovation Leadership Programme for mid-career Indian scholars and practitioners. Oxford’s long-standing links with India are strong and varied. They include cutting-edge research partnerships across the disciplines, outstanding collections of art and manuscripts and with top Indian scholars.
